LASIK surgery side effects

You're home from surgery and recovering from your LASIK procedure. Thanks to the numbing drops, your LASIK eye surgery was virtually painless. When the drops wear off, you may feel some discomfort or dryness for several hours, but probably no severe pain. And like others who have had LASIK eye surgery, you're looking forward to life after LASIK.

For now, though, let's focus on your recovery. Your doctor may instruct you to:

  • Use antibiotic/anti-inflammatory eye drops to keep your eyes free of infection, and reduce any swelling or irritation.
  • Use other drops as recommended to keep your eyes moist.
  • Use eye shields, if given to you, to help prevent scratching, especially during sleep.
  • Wear dark eyeglasses for awhile if you experience sensitivity to bright lights.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes for a few days or weeks, as recommended by your doctor.

LASIK Surgery Side Effects

Many patients experience some LASIK surgery side effects. These can include blurring of vision, sensitivity to light, or a feeling of dryness in the eyes. In most cases, these conditions last only for a short period of time, until your eyes heal.

You will likely be asked to schedule a follow-up doctor visit somewhere between a day and a week after your procedure to make sure everything is healing nicely. However, be alert to anything you think is abnormal and contact your doctor.

Before you have laser vision correction, you also should be familiar with its possible risks and complications.
